About The Artwork

Homage embodies my confrontation and immersion in the behavior of images – the orphaning, co-opting, and versioning actions within their flattened hierarchy of our image-showing and sharing environment. I seek out iconic works of art and painterly gestures, human mark-making, and universal visual symbols such as flowers and natural forms that are constellated, shifted and decontextualized but remain identifiable through the indexical grain of photography. I abstract the digital process of continuous translation and transformation across platforms, tailoring software programs coded to iterate my “found” imagery into elaborate and visually complex “canvases.” I use digital programs as physical tools - distorting, assembling, layering, feathering, and scaling function as my paintbrushes. The found imagery is my paint. This process deliberately reintroduces creative strategies of chance, subjective response and even physical gesture that cut against the conventional idea that we assign to the dynamic of algorithmic processes. I pay homage to the enduring capacities of photography as a medium fueled equally by inherent indexicality and creative happenstance, even from within the shifting expanse of our image environment.

Irene Mamiye is a New York-based artist who incorporates various digital imaging techniques into her photography. Inspired by light, color and movement, her work explores the intricate relationships of her complex personal history, the camera's unique relation to reality and the visionary possibilities of digital imaging. Influenced by artists as diverse as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Gerhard Richter, she employs a precise and labor-intensive process to transcend what is expected of the photographic medium. The luminous images harness chance to transform their sources and involve viewers in journeys toward a personal discovery of significance.
