In both ‘In Nocturna’s garden’ and ‘Liberty gestures in Goud Street’ a naked female is portrayed within an urban nocturnal environment but with different dynamics. ‘In Nocturna’s garden’ ‘s background features pedestrian views along Helen Joseph street. These have been superimposed and mirrored to synthesize something of the aggression and implicit violence and grit of the built urban environment, in stark contrast to the care for women and children that the name Helen Joseph symbolizes. The young model of delicate build was striking in her natural agility and fitness resulting from her life in a communal farm environment. For me, this evokes the constant tension, the battle, between the realities of “collateral damage” in civilization’s machinations, and the fragility and compassion we are capable of. The degree of abstraction in this piece is high with a lot of integration between foreground and background reflecting the degree to which we are inextricably part of our environment – and it is part of us. The title could be understood to make a subtle reference to Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’. While ‘garden signifies cultivation, it also suggests the more organic vital and unpredictable aspects of living. It acknowledges aspects of things like madness, confusion and uncertainty of our individual as well as collective trajectories while not abandoning the beauty of depth, experience and authenticity. Ultra-violet light cured print of multiple-exposure photography on a brushed-silver finish aluminium composite panel. The frame is a simple light 2cm face, 3cm depth synthetic frame, intended for exhibition, storage and shipping purposes.
