About The Artwork

“Juggle or Choose” is a diptych comparing the options for women after World War II with the juggling of today’s women. During WWII women had been doing valued jobs while the men were at war. But when the war ended they were expected to relinquish their independence and crawl back into the kitchen. Most women conformed, married had children and became invisible once again but some fought against this stereotype and forged careers. Today women are expected to ‘Juggle', most work but are still expected to rear children and keep house so are they any more free or independent or just exhausted? The process to achieve the final pieces is a long journey from the original idea searching through 1950's magazines to find the source material to build a collage of words and images. The collages are then hand painted with wash and paint pens to add colour and detail imitating the original feel of printed magazines. The finished collages are scanned, enlarged and produced as digital Giclée prints on fine art paper in editions of only 25. The resulting art pieces are colourful, textural and vibrant with a strong message. The strength of the message is important but with these prints Elizabeth has still created art that is pleasurable to look at with obsessive attention to detail and perfect execution.

As an artist I have gone full circle. I started my career as a silkscreen printmaker exhibiting at the Royal Academy, many UK galleries and international exhibitions in New York, LA and Paris. My journey has taken me through 28 years as a couture designer where fashion became my medium of expression dressing society women, couture brides and celebrities. The world of luxury brands, advertising and media has influenced my work as I step away from fashion and return to my artist roots. The source material for these mixed media collages comes from the glossy fashion magazines. Cutting and repositioning photos, logos and textures creates images that show how brands and fashion have influenced us and inspired our choices. Words and comments are added to elevate my messages. Once complete, the collages are transferred onto canvas and embellished with paint, ink, crystals, gems, glitter and gold leaf. Coating the images with a high gloss resin reinstalls the glossy world of luxury brands and pop culture that are so familiar to us. The glossy world of fashion and celebrity culture has been elevated to the gallery wall where it now makes a new positive statement.
