About The Artwork

I consciously decided to work larger and create works using more than just the original Chiyogami and Washi papers I’d used with my earlier Chiyogami Portraits series. This was a new period of expansion for me and one not yet completed. The Jupiter Overtakes Saturn triptych consists of three pieces: Approach, Conjunction, and Transcendence. It is a meditation on the cycles of life and my own artistic 20-year cycle, which began in 2003 and ended this year (2023). Approach focuses on feeling stifled or the need to hide parts of oneself away, fear, and confusion. Conjunction is a transitional, chaotic piece that illustrates moving away from fear and indecision to actively seeking and working toward change. Transcendence is the celebratory conclusion, where one achieves self-actualization and can express oneself completely and ecstatically. The medium is used specifically to illustrate the texture and tactile experience of everyday life: it is not smooth or perfect, and can be rather jagged and dangerous at times. As the piece moves from Approach through Conjunction and then into Transcendence, we see the edges and parts start to smooth - this represents an erosion of fear and doubt, towards greater self-acceptance.
