ABOUT THE ARTWORK

1. What/who inspired the work? This piece was born out of my exploration of the many masks we wear—both literal and metaphorical. The interplay of identity inspired me, to how we shift, adapt, and transform in different environments. Venetian masks, known for their elegance and intrigue, felt like the perfect representation of that duality: concealment and revelation. I wanted to create something that mirrors the journey of self-discovery—playful, yet profound. The act of playing, of experimenting with different roles and identities, has always been central to my "Play the Artist" philosophy, and this work is an extension of that. 2. What do you hope its viewers will feel/think? I hope viewers are invited into a playful dance with their sense of identity. I want them to wonder: Which masks do I wear? What parts of myself are hidden, and which are revealed? There’s a sense of curiosity and intrigue in each mask—are they protecting something or offering a peek into a hidden truth? I hope it sparks a dialogue between who we are and who we play at being, all while tapping into that inner sense of fun and discovery. In essence, I want them to feel a lightness of spirit, yet to reflect deeply on the many roles we embrace in our lives. 3. Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, and style? The medium was a playful choice—bold colors, and a mix of materials like feathers, beads, and metal accents, all came together like elements in a theatrical performance. The vibrant yellow background is symbolic of joy and optimism, bringing life to each mask and drawing viewers in. The subject of masks allows me to dive into the layers of identity we present to the world, which is central to my work as an artist. My style, both in art and life, is to blend the whimsical with the profound, to allow viewers the freedom to "play" and see what emerges from within. I wanted to create something that visually reflects the fun and freedom I embrace in my creative process.

Born in the monochrome world of 1980s Warsaw, Poland, Patrycja Lucyna Altyńska, known artistically as PLAY, grew up in a landscape where shades of grey dominated everyday life. Her "second teenage wave," amidst a pre-middle age crisis, sparked a passionate love affair with colours, transforming her view of the world and art itself. Initially dismissing an artistic career for those clad in berets and burdened with easels, PLAY eventually unleashed her inner creator, becoming a self-taught artist fascinated by the interplay of all forms of expression, including art, culture, fashion and the exciting synchronicities that connect them. PLAY’s art uplifts and energizes—like a shot of joy straight to your soul! She creates to capture and elevate your vibes, taking you to the next level. Think of it as a trampoline for your emotions—the higher you bounce, the more alive you feel! She’s deeply attuned to the art of synchronicities, those magical moments when life’s seemingly random events align in perfect harmony. PLAY’s creative process often feels like a dance with the universe, where spontaneous bursts of inspiration are triggered by the creativity of others or unusual items that catch her eye. Her work is a vibrant expression of her obsessions with specific colours and media. When she paints, she taps into a flow state where her senses sharpen, and ideas flow freely. PLAY, immerses herself in the ethereal soundscapes of orchestral and cinematic piano music, blending into vibrant rhythms of organic house and acid jazz. This musical backdrop deeply influences her colourful, otherworldly art. Beyond the canvas, PLAY explores metaphysical teachings with a blend of rationally grounded science, adding depth to her mystical narratives. Her works are portals to mystical energies, offering viewers a glimpse into the universe’s magical synchronicities. Each creation celebrates these connections, embodying a fusion of art and otherworldly exploration. PLAY embraces her "happy accidents," viewing them as gifts rather than mistakes. Often, her so-called errors turn out better than her original plan, as if the universe itself is in on the joke. With a degree in politics and a background in marketing, PLAY’s artistic journey re-emerged through her work as a creative life coach. Now based in London, UK, she continues to co-create and inspire. PLAY is an idealist and natural mediator who believes in purposeful and conscious co-creation, driven by win-win scenarios.
