Stop, breath, go! The rain falls down in Cape Town. You can feel the happiness of Mother Nature. I can literally hear how the flat mountain rejoice. Van Hunks gives a wet smokers cough in the face of the devil, with a broad smile, pipe in his hand. I quickly stop at my favorite coffee shop. I catch a jog from my car, it's cold and wet. It's not light yet. The streets are black from the rain and are illuminated with traffic- and headlights reflecting colours of green, yellow and red. "Sir, Sir! ... Please Sir!" I hear a voice. It must be another ‘bergie’. Vervlaks ... what's up with the country. Can I not walk 2 steps without being harassed by poverty? I suddenly feel embarrassed about that thought, I turn around and walk to the woman. “Yes”, I say. “I do not have money so I cannot help you, we are all struggling, sorry.” The woman talks over me and answers. "No, I just want to know if you do not know where Centenary Street is?" She swings her phone in the air and I see she is trying to get the address on google maps. “Can I quickly see the map?”, I ask. She immediately hands over her phone, as if she knows me, total trust. I look at the phone and see it’s a 30-minute walk. “Are you a domestic? What time do you need to be there?” “Yes, a domestic sir, I need to be there at 8h00”. I look at my phone. It's 7h55, she will not make it. I say my mantra in my head: 'Stop, Breath, Go!'. 8h02 .... me and a wild stranger stop in front of 21 Centenary Street. I give sigh of relief. I almost burst into tears when I look into her eyes and I see the tears roll over her cheeks and her big white teeth shine like a string of pearls. “Thank you, Sir” I’m on my way again. The voice on the radio says that the taxis and trains have problems, people are late. I guess that the unions are busy today, lateness and absence is a thing. Fortunately, the domestic of Centenary Street was on time. But she is one, what about all the others. 'Stop, Breath, Go!'

Jan Henning was born in a small university town in South Africa close to Johannesburg. His grandfather saw his talents from an early age and urged in him to practice art. Unfortunately he was never able to study art full time and needed to do short courses where possible. He aims to study identity through his art. Although he mostly does architecture and city scapes, the art desires to involve human connection and human relationships. He struggles with his own relationships, work environment and human perceptions, which questions and struggles is reflected in his art themes.
