ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Stitched vintage fabrics are delicate and they carry a history. This work creates a complex harmonious art. A peaceful, intricate delicacy in a brutal time. These hand worked textile designs have a quiet innate beauty and they carry an echo of history. This body of work creates a complex visual experience. They are feminine art- peaceful and delicate sanctuaries in a brutal time. Most have several layers and may also use crochet or lace elements. They have been found or given to me and I honor the women who worked them first. Art is restoration: the idea is to repair the damages that are inflicted in life, to make something that is fragmented – which is what fear and anxiety do to a person – into something whole. – Louise Bourgeois

Meg Pierce grew up in the Buffalo area. With an MFA from Pratt Institute she continued to do art as well as teach art on Long Island. My art has become more intimate as I aged. I use more personal (and feminine) vintage lace and fabrics, sewing notions. Three-dimensional expressions, stitched, transparent hangings, move and are hung from above. They calm and comfort. I have decided that these hangings are small, intimate devotional installations for quietude and peace- somewhat like icons. This body of work creates a complex visual experience. But on another level the stitching, fabric, lace and pins are also my metaphors for a woman's interior life. Our spirit is constructed year by year with levels of experience and feeling. They become woven together and defend our center. The intricacy of this web often remains hidden, discovered only upon careful reflection. In this later work I have found a way to align a contemporary aesthetic with a deep personal expression of my history and self: a delicate, meditative and peaceful art.
