'Pollen and Swallows' Original Artwork ________________________ Capturing the essence of the thick heat of a June afternoon, when the haymaking awakens a nostalgia for a fading rural existence. Songs of the valley float on the afternoon breeze, spirit voices ringing, rising sweetly in the air with the pollen and swallows. This painting is a contemplation of the balance in all things: of stillness and movement; of memories awoken from slumber; of the ephemeral and the enduring. 'Pollen and Swallows' is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. "It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems, leaves, and silken petals; and the pulse of my body, holding as still as I can, swaying rhythmically, watchful of the responsive emulsion in the light. Then to be washed, bathed, reveled: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded". A mixed media painting on board with deep blue tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant colours of richly layered acrylic ink and poetry inscribed in pencil. Float-mounted, framed & glazed (Hand finished Italian hardwood frame). Ready to hang. Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; studio label, signed and titled to verso. The painting can be purchased unframed, please contact. * Please note that images of the artwork in situ are an indication of how the piece can look in the context of other companion pieces. 71.5 x 18 cm / 28.1 x 7 inches (Framed 90 x 36.5 cm / 35.5 x 14.4 inches)

Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. Sophia’s works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'.
