This piece was inspired by the intersection of consumerism and identity. The barcode, typically a symbol of commodification, transforms into an artistic element that, when scanned, reveals the word "PRODUCT." This concept reflects on how modern society often reduces complex identities and creations into mere products. The use of geometric shapes and bold colors was influenced by the clean, structured aesthetics of minimalism, juxtaposed with the tactile warmth of knitted yarn to create a dialogue between the industrial and the handmade. I hope viewers will be struck by the contrast between the coldness of the barcode and the warmth of the textiles, prompting them to reflect on the ways in which commercial culture can both define and dehumanize. The interactive aspect—scanning the barcode—invites viewers to engage directly with the piece, challenging them to consider their own relationship with consumer goods and the value we place on the things we create. I chose mixed media for its versatility and ability to convey multiple layers of meaning. The use of acrylics on canvas provided a strong, vivid background that complements the softer, more inviting textures of the yarn. Knitting, a traditionally domestic and labor-intensive craft, was deliberately chosen to contrast with the mass-produced implications of the barcode, creating a piece that is both visually and conceptually rich.
