In this context, perhaps the most expressive form of visual dependence to explain the phenomenon is a simplified sign, or better still, an encoded picture. The encoded picture is nothing else than the complete lack of what is presumed as information, the white rectangle. This is not a relationship between the light's meaning and the picture, but that between the information system and meaning. The subject of inquiry here, therefore, is not its relation to reality, but the interpretation of the void hidden in the code. Picture of this kind can only be interpreted, when its physical boundaries are visible, and when it appears in the reality of the existing surroundings, so to speak. Through this fact, the sign is delineated, in other words, it is defined by the encompassing space. Just as the text encompasses the picture in a newspaper. Instead of being arbitrary, its form constitutes the complete window of the employed technique, in a way providing the sum total of all the possible formats. Since the picture shows nothing, the picture's relations to space defines the picture without picture. If you like, this is more than simply being our relations to everything and nothing: this is also the desire to make an attempt to decode the encoded sign. One of the possible methods of studying the nature of pictures is to make a picture of the picture. The resulting image will occupy the space of the empty square, but at the same time it will also modify it. It conceals the void, but parallel with that it will also mark its place in virtual space.
