Born in Nagano, Japan, Tomo Sakurai graduated from Yokohama University of Art and Design and is a contemporary artist currently based in Tokyo. Starting from the methodologies of conceptual and minimal art, Sakurai’s practice develops works that incorporate contrast and multilayered structures through the observation of materials and physical phenomena. While reinterpreting traditional Japanese materials and techniques, the work explores their integration with contemporary modes of thought. Central to the practice is the concept of Awai—a relational space in which opposing forces coexist—and the emergence of Dynamic Equilibrium within that field. Major solo exhibitions include Schrödinger’s Curtain (2024, Tokyo International Gallery) and Y = (0.298912R + 0.586611G + 0.114478B) (2022, Amalgam Art Gallery). Sakurai has also participated in numerous exhibitions and international art fairs both in Japan and abroad, including FOCUS Art Fair 2022 in Paris (Carrousel du Louvre, France), Art Fair Tokyo 2021 (Tokyo International Forum), and PANORAMA (2024, Gallery Assistant at Atelier Natália Gromicho). Sakurai’s work has been exhibited at the Mitsuo Aida Museum (Tokyo), the Korean Art Museum (Seoul), and CICA Museum (South Korea), and is held in the collections of shrines and temples as well as corporate and public institutions in Japan and internationally. In recent years, the practice has further deepened through the production of original pigments and ongoing material research, focusing on the equilibrium that emerges within opposing relationships such as matter and spirit, and tradition and innovation.
