ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sublimatio Vitae is an exploration of the things that shove us off the edge of planning, reason, logic, safety and into the unknown. It is a risk. It is a step off the cliff. Whatever you thought could be before is shattered and a new reality cracks open. This work is inspired by an exploration of the work of Carl Jung on alchemy, and the scientific idea of a solid, when heated, passing directly into a gaseous state, "blooming" out of the vessel.

Meghan DeRoma (b. Chicago, IL, US) is a visual artist and storyteller working in collage, painting, sculpture, and bookmaking. Blurring the lines between narrative, representation, and abstraction, DeRoma focuses on the archetypal symbols and themes of the intricacy and nuance of human relationship—our relationship to Self, other humans, the “other”, (wo)man’s relationship with nature, and our own inherent wildness. Overlaying themes include curiosity, gestural flow, and a sly-smile approach to obscured symbolism and playful mixed metaphor. Her process involves discovery and articulation, using her hands and organic materials, many of which have an inherent history, to imply a sense of ethereal nostalgia, familiarity, and memory’s edge. DeRoma received her BFA in Sculpture from Miami University, Oxford, OH. She has done continuing education coursework in the arts at the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia University, Chicago, and creative writing at Harvard University under film director Catherine Eaton. She is an artist member and curator at Dorado 806 Projects in Santa Monica and lives and works in Venice, CA.
