ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is made from a variety of animal fibers. It mostly reflects the natural colours of the originating animal, with the exception of the lowest section. In the upper part of the work, curly leicester locks and white alpaca are incorporated in undyed merino. These are considered fine quality wools and fibers, suitable to be worn against the skin. The middle of the work, is naturally black alpaca. The fiber type is fairly rough and coarse. The lower part of the work is natural merino fiber, dyed with tea.

Erica is a Sydney-based artist, drawn to textile manipulation art-making practices. She has studied a range of arts and textile practices through the University of Technology Sydney, the College of Fine Arts and through workshops by various practitioners. She works in ancient textile techniques, found objects and movement / embodiment. In my most recent work, I have focused on crafting the canvas. Working in this way, the canvas is not a neutral "blank space" where ideas and images are staged. Instead the canvas reveals, conceals, protrudes and is an active participant in the artwork as a whole.
