The human cargo (La tonnellata umana) is the term defining the mass of Italian migrants packed in horrendous conditions onto the boats traveling to Latin America at the beginning of the 20th century. My artwork, depicted on recycled packaging paper and including pages from an old Atlas, is inspired by the dramatic issue of migration in various ages and countries: starting at the beginning of the 20th century with the migration of Italian peasants to Latin America, passing through the great migration from Albania to Italy in the 1990s, ending with today’s tragic arrival of refugees from northern Africa. The sea is the common thread binding all these generations of very different people, running away from poverty, the atrocities of wars and hunger. The work is divided into three sections from left to right: 1. Cargo, 2. Vlora, 3. Lampedusa This work was selected at the ColumbiaThreadneedlePrize and exhibited at the Mall Gallery in London, in February 2018.

I am an Italian artist and illustrator. My works depict a world in which reality is represented through metaphorical and psychological images. My interest is focused on issues related to the psyche. I'm interested in feelings, emotions and troubles of the soul. My subjects show a fragile humanity, not out of inner weakness but out of a natural vocation. The use of vibrant colors and bold contrasts, alongside the mélange of various media, enable me to create a complex world where reality coexists with metaphorical elements, the surreal and psychological; a world that can be interpreted in a variety of levels. I work on paper, cardboard and canvas using mixed media: monotype, collage, graphite, acrylic, pastels, grattage. Environmental problems are a topic that I hold dear and all my artistic production develops around the idea of recovering and recycling poor and discarded materials. I find inspiration in paper as a material, and I use discarded magazines, clippings of my drawings or monotypes, old printed papers and envelopes.
