This is an original photogravure embellished with acrylic paint and ink entitled "The Other Boss" by Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO). It is 13" high by 10" width. The subject matter is a seated male portrait in profile. The palette is mostly monochrome in the original black & white etching with red and yellow-orange highlights. This early 19th century photogravure is of a portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) created by Friedrich Bruckmann of Munich, Germany. The literary celebrity is seated in profile in a formal dark colored suit, facing the viewer's left. He leans slightly forward, his right hand inside his vest, his left hand extended to his front, holding a folded paper. Leaves of a vine frame his figure. On the left is a window looking out on a sea or ocean with a small sail ship visible. To this formal portrait of Goethe, the contemporary artist has added a small party hat tied under the model's chin, white-face clown make-up, including vertical stripes across the eyes and an oversized red mouth along with a bright yellow round ball on the profiled nose. The long, well-coifed wavy hair has also been hand-tinted with golden highlights. The photogravure has then been float framed on ragboard. The original cursive 'Goethe' across the bottom remains prominent. The work is in pristine condition and signed by the artist.

Born 1948, Denver, CO. Saatchi site presence maintained by Young's Fine Art. Extensive website at . "De La Cruz's mastery of formal and experimental techniques reflects a career dedicated to creative probing and discipline. It is rare indeed to come into contact with an artist who so successfully ranges from abstraction to surrealism in single canvases. Themes of personal identity and interpersonal responsiveness are layered into his work, allowing the viewer to share in the artist's process of questioning the relationships of his subjects to the world. The insights that develop in his works are universal in their ability to connect the reflective with the informative." Joaquin Alvarado Jerry De La Cruz (b 1948, Denver, CO) was listed among the three dozen most influential regional artists of the twentieth century in a Denver Post survey of regional curators (2001). His was the only Spanish surname. At the first International Latino Art Auction held in Phoenix, AZ in conjunction with Sotheby's (2003), De La Cruz proved the best selling artist of the auction and drew the highest auction price for a single work. The Denver Art Museum's first purchase of a living Hispanic's work for its permanent collection was a De La Cruz. Years later, he was the only artist considered when that same museum wanted to commission a contemporary digital work commemorating the opening of its new Libeskind Building (2007). De La Cruz was the recipient of back-to-back artist in residency grants from Colorado in his early career and received as well their very last painting fellowship in 2000. For a spell in 2006, works of De La Cruz were included in three unrelated art museum exhibits in Denver (Denver Art Museum, El Museo and the Mizel). Other honors include award of Best Art Event of the Year by Westword Magazine and appointment to Denver's Commission on Arts and Culture. De La Cruz currently splits his time between his studio in the Santa Fe District in Denver and his new studio in the Little River District of Miami.
