Biography Lawrence Kwakye (b. 1972, Utrecht) is an artist and designer known for pushing the boundaries of creativity and expression. Growing up in the culturally vibrant Netherlands, with a Ghanaian father and a Hungarian mother, Lawrence’s diverse heritage and natural curiosity have deeply shaped his unique artistic vision. His work explores the systemic structures that define human existence, highlighting how humanity struggles within cycles of dependency. Through his art, he visualises the ongoing tension between holding on and the need for transformation. Central to Lawrence’s practice is the idea of transition — pivotal moments where new perspectives emerge and fresh possibilities take shape. He challenges established ways of thinking by stepping into the "In-Between," a conceptual space between open exploration and introspective solitude. This philosophy underpins his larger project, BOB & I (Between Open Borders and Isolation), where multiple art forms merge into a growing, interconnected universe. Lawrence’s creative process blends the real and the abstract. He often works with natural textiles like jute and cotton, sometimes incorporating light, and developed a personal technique called "Imprint" to fuse fabrics and paint into richly textured compositions. Photography is an essential part of his work as well, merging seamlessly with painting and the Imprint method to create new visual narratives. Through this multidisciplinary approach, Lawrence invites viewers into spaces of reflection, encouraging them to reconnect with themselves and reimagine their place within a rapidly shifting world.
