The Wizard #2 Artwork

These are elaborate collage pieces. I create designs with ink on sheets of paper. On a piece of heavy watercolor paper or Multimediaboard I sketch out the image I want to represent with these designs. From there it is a process of choosing which design goes where, cutting the pieces to fit the specific shape and finally gluing each one onto the image. I lightly coat the completed piece of work with a clear gel to secure its integrity. What I am exploring lately is collaging faces using a wide variety of mediums. I work on the "edge," taking the two-dimensional format and expanding it or pushing its limits and playing with people's expectations of those limits. I mount the collage onto foam board leaving a border that creates a frame. This frame is then incorporated into the artwork itself. The frame is not something that is added later, is external to and "confines" the piece. My aim is to create a piece of art that remains open to the viewer to fully enjoy the texture and to continue to be witness to the steps in the creative process. The work remains a part of the living world, organic and not sealed and set inside a time capsule.
