The title comes from the astrophysics paper “Synthesis of the Elements in Stars” (1957) often referred to after its authors Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle. This paper explored the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis, namely, the notion that all chemical elements (except hydrogen and helium) are created within stars like our sun. At the end of their life, these chemicals are blasted across the universe, laying down the essential conditions for life to form. The light boxes displayed here use imagery from microbacterial, dendrite and peltate (wood source) patterning and juxtapose this with imagery derived from galaxies and star formations.
