About The Artwork

What started off as non various nondescript colours on an off-cut of canvas, with time and patience found its form as an allusion to the softness and vibrance of the aquatic realm. Half ocean floor, half clouded dream, the imagery is an invitation to day dream, or float off on a warm pleasant memory. Derived from imagination and the memories of being at the coast, this painting brings to mind the sensuality of warm salt breezes, lapping waves, tender setting suns, and quenching moments with loved ones. Acrylic paint, ink, glue, embroidery on canvas.

Elaine Ng’endo is a Kenyan-Canadian visual artist based in Montreal. Her work explores the interiority of the lived experience - recessed ideas and imagery - in an effort to access and illuminate moments of tranquility. While her process may be highly intuitive and meditative, she is strongly guided by colour, rhythm, and texture which act as a road map in her creative practice. The most crucial part to her process is finding patterns embedded within colours and forms and making associations to tell a story. She finds inspiration in the visual lyricism of artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Alma Thomas while finding intellectual nourishment in the words of Carl Jung, Maya Angelo, Alan Watts, among others. Over time, her practice has broadened towards capturing the subtleties of the seemingly disparate in order to find commonalities. Her interest lies in finding the ingredients that come together in the formation of our collective resonances. Through these visual meanderings, her intent is to amplify and elaborate on the notion of ‘connectivity’.
