About The Artwork

Evoking an aerial view, this piece comprises shadowing effects in wool. While ancestral skills of felting, spinning and natural dyeing are used in my practice, I edit the pieces so they remain contemporary in feel. This piece includes wool from a black Gotland lamb, and gold threads from tussah silk. Wool has several incredible qualities, it's antibacterial and repels dirt, it's naturally fire retardant, baffles noise and provides visual comfort.

We gravitate to wool, a natural fiber that’s traditionally known to bring us warmth and comfort. My work is part of the system that includes farmers, the sheep, shearers, mills, silkworms, growers, foragers; the educators of ancestral skills, the craftspeople who make the tools I use, and mother nature. I’m eternally grateful to each and every one of them. In its rawest form a fleece has fantastic visual depth, and during the process I tune in and sense how the fibers want to express themselves. And because I source particular breeds of wool from farmers, plus grow and forage color for dyeing, my practice often becomes a catalyst for an underlying discussion around materials that we squander. Recent bodies of work have included: ‘Journeys that I’ll never Take’ which asked questions about our physical and psychological boundaries. Work that explored where and when we Yield. And most recently, a series of pieces driven by the ideas of Love, Hope & Entanglement. My work takes on different aesthetics at scale and distance. It can also be gently touched bringing a new level of understanding and appreciation to the natural materials and subject matter.
