About The Artwork
Being a packrat (self proclaimed but accurate) has been hugely beneficial to my artistic process. As proven by the time I stumbled across my 1978 pocket sized Webster Dictionary. As I held it and re-explored its dusty pages I mused, “this could be the beginning of my next mad scientist creative endeavor.” In my closet I unearthed an old piece of wood I used as the base for this work. I also uncovered an old sketchbook of mine filled with drawings which sparked the thought, “why not?” Next came my too tight leather jacket that was sacrificed for my creative spiral. As I modgepodged pages from the dictionary to the piece I reflected on the magic this 5 inch by 4 inch book inspired. With some cardboard for more texture and the leather cover of the dictionary my 1978 Webster masterpiece was complete. Words of wisdom – your junk drawer may just birth magic.

“Found Objects Find Me” is the foundation of abstract multi-disciplinary artist Michael Peterson. Born and raised in Eau Claire, WI he is a true townie and US Air Force Veteran. Through Peterson's time in the service he was exposed to the European Masters and contemporary art greats while stationed in West Germany, which took him on a winding life-long journey of finding trash and making art. Peterson studied at UW-EC after his service in the 80’s but dropped out when the classes turned from art to the gen eds. He has mentored under Tiit Reed, Janet Carson, and CV Peterson. He has exhibited locally at Wisconsin Arts West, 200 Main Gallery, Pablo Center at the Confluence, and the Heyde Center for the Arts. Peterson has also exhibited nationally at Kelwood Contemporary Art, University of Alaska - Anchorage, Kent State University, and more. He has outlasted many of the galleries and clubs he has exhibited with but is always down for a beer and good art conversation. He finds beauty in the rough and that includes life.
