Zones Artwork

An homage to the DeStijl movement for its centennial. Like many of my pieces, they begin and end in different places. The original idea was generated from the working title, "Compartments", or "compartmentalization", as a borrowed metaphor from psychology. The original painting was cut into sections, then reassembled. The white stripes were a way to resolve the metaphor of "compartments", and also a way to make a connection between mid-60s rock 'n' roll and minimalism in the visual arts. I believe rock 'n' roll is a form of conceptual art, evidenced by all the conceptual albums that have been produced since the mid-60s, most notably The Beatles' Sargent Pepper and the many conceptual Pink Floyd albums. I was doing this kind of geometric art even before I became a musician, so it has come full circle.
