For the last ten years I've painted food or the landscapes they come from, painting in oil and egg tempera. While not an environmental activist I want to paint the beauty of nature while we can still enjoy it and hopefully for centuries to come. The old masters enjoyed painting food as it was a sign of value and wealth among other things. I like to paint food for its gem-like beauty, so important today as agriculture is changing the food we eat. It is my hope that viewers can enjoy my paintings similarly. Oil and egg tempera are both ancient mediums, but using egg tempera carries with it the craft of an alchemist and contributes to feeling as if I'm painting with the old masters. While it is an ancient medium I bring to the craft current techniques and ideas. Painting in the representational style dispenses with the task of defining the subject as it is obvious, but it also allows a broader viewing audience to understand and enjoy the art. I also enjoy finding the abstractions within my subject matter. Some of these end up in other works of art. I have studied under Koo Schadler for egg tempera) and John MacDonald, Sandra Wakeen, David Dunlop and Edward Eichel for oil and drawing. All my egg temperas are painted on accurately prepared and sealed panels with a ground of 7-12 layers of highly absorbent marble dust gesso instead of chalk. The finished paintings are protected first with a polishing, then a coating of handmade shellac. This is finally coated with Renaissance Wax (developed by the British Museum) and polished to produce the beautiful soft egg tempera finish. All my oil paintings are given a final coat of retouch varnish for protection against pollution.

I am an American artist based in New England and use ancient mediums to paint in oil and egg tempera. I fell in love with painting at the age of nine and more recently with egg tempera after taking workshops with the master egg tempera painter Koo Schadler. As a representational artist (realist without being photo realism) I take a naturalist's and painterly, not a romanticist's perspective, seeing the gemlike qualities of everyday scenes and objects: iridescence, color changes where light hits a curve, shapes refracted through a water-filled glass bottle, shadows and reflections in landscapes and interiors. Choosing the representational style and small to medium sized paintings, I search for the meditative beauty in the ordinary and the extraordinary in the often overlooked, things not seen with a fleeting glance. While I like to push against the precision needed for egg tempera painting, I also like the spontaneity of oiI. I also love music and play the piano, the cello and do a fair amount of gardening which you'll often see in many of my paintings.
