6th and Washington 02 2016 Painting

This was painted from direct observation using some of the best paints available (Winsor/Newton and Old Holland) in Spring and Fall 2016 here in Bloomington, IN. It is framed in a red oak shadow box which adds 1.5 inches to the over all dimensions of the piece. It was exhibited at my solo show in October 2016 at BlueLine Gallery here in Bloomington and also in the annual Indiana Heritage Arts juried exhibit in Nashville, IN in April of 2017. Any time a plein air composition is chosen there are always two locations considered: the scene painted, and the spot where the painter sets up. I chose to paint this particular location as it places the viewer in the middle of the street with sunlight pouring in from the far right yet I was on the sidewalk in the shade offered from the mass of buildings on the right. The shade helps me see what I am working on a great deal and is way more comfortable than standing in direct sunlight.
