A brief history of lobster Painting

This piece depicts a lobster transcending the different ages of humanity, specifically our art. Moving from left to right we see early cave art to ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, China, Medieval Islamic, Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism (more accurately post-Impressionism) to modernism and finishing with post-modernism graffiti art. The painting comes full circle as the first and last panels both represent art on a surface not specifically designed for it. The ouroboros exemplifies this as well as being co-opted as a representation for critiquing art's perpetual battle with itself as it tries to define what art is, particularly in the modern world, hence its position. Why a lobster? Why not.
