About The Artwork

This work was at my personal exhibition "Montenegro retablo" in The Church of Santa Maria in Punta, Budva, Montenegro, 2015. The text (it is written in the Montenegrin language) at work says: “I thank Saint Mary very much for the fact that when the wheel fell off my Honda and rolled down the serpentine, and I ran and could not catch up for a long time, Saint Mary made the wheel fall flat and did not roll any further.” Thankful retablo (ex voto) pictures that people usually order from artists to thank the saint for a miracle that happened to them or their relatives. Often this is gratitude for healing, salvation from shipwreck, for the fact that everything is made up of work. But someone gives thanks for the fact that the mother-in-law finally left, for the fact that the husband did not catch the lover, for adding him to friends on Facebook. Three elements of the retablo are necessarily: the image of the event, the situation, the portrait of the Saint and the text with a description and gratitude for divine intervention. The most popular thanksgiving retablo are used in Mexico. Catholic tradition and Indian customs were combined there. They also dedicated grateful images to the gods. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were passionate collectors of retablos. Frida herself painted retablo paintings. One day she came across an exvoto with an image of an accident similar to the one in which she appeared. Frida added an inscription with the date and several details to the drawing.

I am a Ukrainian artist. I was born in Donetsk in 1979. At the age of three, I decided to become an artist. I graduated from the Ukrainian National Academy of Arts, the department of temple (monumental) painting. From there, I have the academic school of drawing and painting and a great love for the Ukrainian folk icon. I participated in many group exhibitions, plein air and art residences. I had five personal exhibitions. I make collages, wall paintings, sculptures, illustrations. But the main thing that I do, love and feel the most is painting, oil painting. And in painting, the most important thing for me is color and lightness of color. . Sometimes I use text, words in my works. This is possible because my grandmother was a writer and my parents were journalists. I often make a series of works. I want what I create to be filled with feelings and have a layering of meanings like a good poem.
