ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The unusually warm and dry autumn has produced a plethora of butterflies and moths. Inspired by the sight of 11 cream striped owl moths in my house one Sunday evening I decided to use South African Moths as the subject for a series of miniature watercolour paintings. By choosing such varied variety of moths I hope to bring awareness to the vast beauty and variety of exotic looking moths to the viewer in the beautiful glowing watercolour medium. Using a limited palette of Winsor & Newton and Danielle Smith pure pigments and my favourite W&N Miniature Series 7 no.0 and Billy Showell no.2 brushes for the intricate detail, on 300gsm Arches Hot Pressed 100% Cotton creates an archival museum quality painting.

Born into a family of shooting, fishing, trail-blazing pioneers and taxidermists; Nicole grew up surrounded by natural history and her family’s collection of Africana . Spending her youth studying the works of Finch-Davies, Samuel Daniels and Audubon it was only in 2007 that she would find a brilliant teacher, Ann Harris-Deppe, to impart the techniques of the Contemporary Botanical and Natural History art medium on her. Capturing scientific detail, understanding and drawing out the magical reactions of water and colour on paper seems to satisfy her obsessive compulsive tendencies. Being a non-hunting, spiritual aspirant and vegetarian yogini, her artwork seems to have finally given her relevance in the family. All artworks are done on 300 & 600gsm Hot Pressed, acid-free Arches paper (100% cotton), with a limited pallet of 6 of the purest Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith water colour pigments. Combined with conservation framing this ensures the artworks remain of archival, museum-standard quality.
