Oil on 3 sheets of Acrylic Perspex. This painting is an abstracted amalgamation of a place studied at two different time periods at the end of winter and a month later at the start of spring. It aims to reflect the speed of change at this time of the year and the constant cycles of the seasons. The translucent layers of Acrylic perspex give an incredible sense of depth and help carry light through the painting. Further to this the different layers of perspex help create a moving spatial effect which mimics the experience of foregrounds moving in relation to the more static background layers. This painting has been mostly painted using squeegees, palette knives and brushes. I’m always excited by how different tools and mark making can explore various aspects of the physicality of paint in order to express different textures and surfaces.

My various drawings and paintings are an examination of my experiences, exploring aspects of the complexity of our world and our place within it. The modes, materials and surfaces of the work change in response to the varying needs of expressing this. I have recently returned to the Buckinghamshire countryside after living in London for over 20 years and have therefore engaged with the natural landscape after previously working through more urban themes. Recent oil paintings use layers of clear Acrylic Perspex as a base so that light is captured within the work and as the viewer moves around the work the front layers move spatially in relation to the rear layers. This recreates the experience of moving through these landscapes in a subtle way. I have also travelled to China, Japan, Thailand, Australia, India, Chile and the US amongst other places. These experiences and my interest in Physics also inspire ideas related to differences in time and place. My inspirations vary, but perhaps focus on those who use expressive elements in their work and explore paint and other media as a physical entity, such as Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter & Robert Rauschenberg.
