I made sketches for this small painting a few years ago after seeing a documentary on children in war zones. It was only for a brief moment that I saw this boy with his pet sheep in his arms. Currently I am working on a series called The Works of Flora Mangold Flora Mangold is a young painter and an archivist. She is the main character in the novel I am working on. The paintings are a collection of her work in chronological order. Over the years Flora moves away from realism into abstraction, with the intension of removing concepts of representation in her paintings and instead, following her artistic intuition rather than preconceived ideas. I am alternating between writing and painting, following Flora’s ideas as they form and develop in my imagination. (Notes on paintings before 2020: The stripes in my META and Kingfisher works developed over time, many layers leading up to the final composition. I did not use masking tape or rulers, only allowing for two or three measured vertical lines on a canvas as guides at the very beginning of each painting. Some of these canvasses are still in my studio, and I have continued adding color over the past few years.)
