Alp Grüm (4) - Restaurant Belvedere; plein air painting break Painting

This painting belongs to a series of watercolor paintings capturing the views I collected during a day of plein air painting with a painting group lead by Ingrid Buchthal. We arrived by train at the nicely located train station Alp Grüm high up in the Swiss Alps near by Poschiavo and the Bernina Pass. The day started with a blue sky and a beautiful morning light with stunning mountains all around. I walked up with all my painting equipment to the Restaurant Belvedere from where we later on that day painted the impressive view of the Piz Palü. The painting "Alp Grüm (4)" captured the Restaurant Belvedere from above in midst of a stunning view over the surrounding mountain chains and the lake Lago di Poschiavo in the distance. The white umbrellas marked the place where we had settled down for plein air painting. In contrast to the sunlit morning clouds came up in the afternoon and it was during a painting break when I took several photographs to capture this view with the ever changing light. The painting was then done later in the studio. Materials used: Schmincke HORDAM Watercolours (Artist Quality) on ARCHES® mould-made Watercolour paper, 100% cotton, 185 g/m² Format of the paper: about 56 cm x 76 cm Format of the painting: 50 x 75 cm (it is actually about 1-2 mm larger on each side so that it can be conveniently mounted behind a passepartout with a 50 x 75 cm window).
