Appanihita Painting

Appanihita - this Pali word can be translated as "free from desires". This is a very interesting translation because there are two issues here - the issue of freedom and the issue of desires. How do these two aspects of life relate to each other? How do they interact? And ultimately what is freedom? Most often, freedom is associated with the ability to make free choices. Unfortunately, such freedom is extremely stressful and its consequence is not a sense of happiness and true freedom. Almost every choice brings resignation, a sense of loss. I chose one but had to give up the other. My thirst was quenched and immediately gave rise to another thirst. But there is also another kind of freedom. Freedom from having to make decisions. It is the freedom experienced by a monk in a monastery or a lonely sailor in the middle of the ocean. Neither of them is concerned with the satisfaction of desires in their decisions, but both experience an extraordinary fullness because at that particular moment they are free from desires. This artwork is painted on canvas stretched on wooden frame. I was using professional oil-colours with premium quality colour pigments that have high resistance to fading.
