This framed and ready to hang, oil painting is on arches paper .In this piece I would say that Joan Mitchell, Pollack and de Kooning were influential in my application and layering of the oil paint and the brush work. The work was painted during 3 weeks of the pandemic and 2 weeks before my son is to marry. I titled it thinking of a ballet dancer. Despite pain or injury the passion to dance, super cedes all. There is a frenzy of controlled movement and spins and turns in the piece. Much like when I turn the painting as I am composing. In these paintings which are new I am using sharp angular marks with the oil sticks that cumulatively create and underlying structure. When the structure is build I then begin to destroy, erase, subtract, intensify some of that structure thats when the painting begins to become cohesive. I then begin to refine the piece paying attention to the papers edge relationship to the edge of the painting. My work is always intuitive and emotional.I trust that the meaning becomes clear and transmitted through my fingertips. I think the work is a statement about both survival, my drive and will to live, but more important to have a life filled with passion and joy despite the pain and chaos of the pandemic. I hope the viewer will feel a sense of excitement, hope and vitality with the piece as well as a touch of sorrow. I am using paper because I am working in my home studio where I neither have the space nor materials to work on canvas. It is not safe yet to return to paint in my large studio where there are 8 artists sharing common space. Work in paper with oil paint has only been in the last 4 months but there is a directness and immediacy I like. The work is completed in several weeks not months or years because the scale is smaller. The style is experimental for me.
