ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Technological lifeforms feel an irresistible pull. Our technological lives produce vast numbers of artifacts. Many of which become obsolete in a very short time. All these relics, once vital to our daily life, end up in drawers and landfills— forgotten as soon as their usefulness is eclipsed. Electric Ecology is an investigation of a mythical afterlife for the forgotten connective tissue of technology. Plugs and cables live on in an imagined realm.

My work is driven by visual fascination and informed by technique. I dream of the next painting as I evolve my practice to facilitate my vision. Mythology and art history fascinate me. For over a decade I have painted in series. Each group of works is like a conversation with slightly different points of view overlaying to create a picture that is larger than any one work can convey. One image leads to the next. The paintings feed each other. Like a favorite topic amongst a group of very close friends I find that a given series can span years. Painted objects are outside of time once created and I enjoy going back to old themes as if I just left them yesterday. Process unites my painting practice which at first glance can seem rather varied. I have a strict any means necessary policy. Inspiration often comes as a glimmer of a vision that I then chase down and try to capture in paint. From tiny brushes to palette knives and outdoor paint flinging I use exactly what I must to best convey my vision. I incubate the seed of inspiration evolving a process to fit the needs of the final work. I think in terms of chemistry that chases the allure of alchemy. For each painting I dream up technical processes that lead to the transcendental quality I seek. My ideal is a kind of sublimation between the physical presence of paint and an intangible suggestion of something fascinating. Often I imagine a reality just on the edge of our own. A fertile place of almost myth that is born from the beauty of the world around us. I am always looking, searching our world for the secret glimmer of another. Flowx An ongoing collaboration between two artists and our atmosphere. These paintings relate to the sky installations that my husband Tim Elverston and I have been doing for the last three years. We travel the world responding to different locations by putting up arrays of Flowx. The kites become like brush strokes in the the sky. They are our own unique design, made using technology that we developed in at our design studio WindFire Designs. I started making paintings about Flowx to help us understand our work. Paint allowed me to free my visions from the constraints of reality and to imagine what we might do next. Thickly painted using a pallet knife with layer upon layer of color my Flowx series are about capturing and exploring an intangible moment. They have been instrumental in developing our installation work.
