Society has an understanding of black men as being harsh, tough and hyper-masculine; we see ourselves portrayed as violent, angry, dangerous and traumatised people, much more often than as loving or caring. It is a perception that even manages to affect the way in which we look at ourselves and each other. In a way, the black barbershop stands to contradict these notions. It is an intimate and vulnerable place, of therapy and warmth, in which the relationship held between barber and client is “defined by moments of tenderness and trust”. We come here to seek beauty in both our minds and body, a boost in our confidence, and ultimately a reinforcement of our identity. Inspired by the works of, Kehinde Wiley, Kerry James Marshall, and by an article in Fader magazine entitled “The power and politics of the black barbershop” by Jason Parham, Austin’s Barbers II captures the intimacy and warmth of the setting. It is garnished with an elaborate border that highlights the subjects as more elegant and wholesome. The painting pushes towards a progression in society’s understanding and assumptions about black men.
