ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I lived in Asia for some time and have always loved bamboo - the shapes, the arc of a bending stem, the sound of the wind on the leaves... This series celebrates all of those things, and ultimately the memories of that time. A cyanotype is a chemical process, a photographic technique which allows unique prints to be made directly onto the paper from shadows. I work outside, the process allows for an element of chance with the elements of nature all playing a part. This series is made on hand coated heavy weight 100% cotton paper with its beautiful natural rough edge exposed to allow for a float mount.

My work seeks to interpret the essentiality beyond the purely visual, with a curiosity in how memory can focus this, filter it, and how individuals with the same visual experience can come away with such different visual memories of it. The process of creating allows an idea to expand and distil again as a concept, with images often becoming abstract and calm in the process. My figurative work is quicker, it seeks to capture the substance of the pose, be that weight, tension, movement, form or emotion - the life within it.
