ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My ongoing series of portraits of the herd are inspired by thirty four years of raising bovines on a farm in Virginia. In this series I seek to capture the individual beauty, personality, and innocence of these pastoral creatures. I paint these intimate portraits slowly, building up many layers of oil paint until I feel I have captured the essence of the cow. My painting is 6" x 6" on panel. This painting is framed (7 x 7 x 1.5) in a white washed contemporary floater frame and ready to hang from a wire.

Nancy has been a painter since childhood. Her first memory at age three is of making a crayon portrait of a pink poodle. For thirty-five years she and her husband raised cattle on their farm in central Virginia, nurturing a herd comprised of many breeds and diverse models for her painting. In her work, she explores the emotional depths of her subjects, bridging the boundary between the human and animal worlds.
