About The Artwork

Chinese brush painting has been my passion for many years. It is very challenging as the rice paper does not tolerate corrections and your first stroke is very important and usually your only stroke. On the other hand, there are happy accidents that enhance the spontaneity of these paintings. The spontaneity of color and ink in combination can result in brilliant and surprising displays. Often a practice sketch will be unique and too good to discard. In this case the flower was a practice piece for a larger painting. Years later I added a bumble bee for the fun of it and it resulted in a marvelous little painting.

Born in Osnabrueck, Germany I immigrated to Canada as a teenager. Travel beckoned after I completed studies for a Registered Nurse’s degree, and I spent 26 years in my beloved Alaska. While living and working in Alaska I took several art classes at the University of Alaska which lead to an Associate Arts degree in Liberal Arts. I dabbled in watercolor and charcoal (portrait) painting. Then my husband’s work led to extensive travel in Asia and Europe. While living in Hong Kong in 1997 I became fascinated with Chinese Brush Painting, Chinese art history and Chinese culture. Upon taking a spontaneous-style brush painting class at the HK Arts Center from Mok E-den, renowned artist, teacher and collector, he invited me to join his studio group and I became thoroughly immersed in the art and culture for two years. Upon return to the USA I began studies of the Spontaneous Brush Style Painting, Chinese culture and history with Dr. Ning Yeh for the last 8 years and Huang, Lan for 3 years. I have donated a number of paintings to a medical institution for their annual fund raising art auction. My work has been awarded first prize in several student and local art shows. Another passion is landscape design, rare plants and identifying plants in other countries and climes. I am always on the lookout for art and quilting books. My interest in medicine is ongoing, especially in scientific breakthroughs and discoveries that lead to cures for life threatening diseases. I presently reside in Corona Del Mar, California with my husband Leonard. We are blessed with two sons and four grandchildren. I am thankful that I have the freedom to follow my passions.
