About The Artwork

My subject was Ben Winslow, a homeless deaf mute who had some cognitive and mental issues. He wandered through the Est Village of New York City. He often came to Maryhouse, a shelter for the poor founded by Dorothy Day. I befriended him and asked if I could paint his portrait. His response was but a grunt. When I finished it I made an appointment to to show it to him at the shelter. I was a bit apprehensive about what his reaction would be. when I unveiled it, his large grin and the glint in his eyes spoke volumes that words could never have expressed. Pure joy!
