Birch and Maple Painting

Alice Chen is a self-taught oil painter who was born in Taiwan. She got an early exposure to art during her childhood in Douliu with Chinese brush painting and Western watercolor painting in school. She now paints a wide variety of subjects and themes in her Moose Island studio.  Alice loves to experiment with new styles, techniques and subjects. Her works often explore the boundaries between the abstract and the real, East and West, with elements of traditional Chinese brush painting and European impressionism. She focuses on colors, textures, and brush and palette knife energy. Her works often begin with a concrete subject, but quickly become explorations of emotional colors and abstract themes. Her work is constantly evolving and she is always dreaming of new ways to push the limits of expression for her experiences with nature and her own imagination. Alice began her professional art career when she sold her first painting in the annual “Paint Eastport Day” event at the Eastport Arts Center in 2009. She started painting almost every day and joined the Eastport Gallery cooperative in 2013. She went on to be one of six local artists participating in an experimental Visual Art Song concert, “Musemorphosis” which combined poetry, songs and visual artworks on stage at Eastport Art Center.
