Bo-Kaap Painting

When depicting South African culture, artists tend to focus on African culture, such as Zulu, Xhosa, etc. I was preparing for an exhibition in New York, and decided to rather use the very colourful Cape Malay culture as my main focus point. The Cape Malay people have been part of this country's heritage since the 1800s and have their own particular customs, dances and delicious dishes. The scene I have painted is situated in Cape Town, in the Bo-Kaap. Historically, these houses were where the slaves lived and were painted white. When a slave was freed, he would then paint his house with bright colours as a symbol of his freedom.
