About The Artwork

As an abstract painter and collage artist, I've recently become fascinated with Japanese 'boro'. The word boro means ragged, tattered, or repaired and refers to the historical technique used by the rural population of Northern Japan to patch together clothing and household articles. This utilitarian patchwork resulted in beautiful, spontaneous designs and colors. In this piece, I've used surplus canvas - hand-dyed and recycled from previous paintings - found paper and fabrics, and stitching, as well as paint, charcoal, crayon, m and other media to create a painting that feels both raw and refined, incomplete and complete, simple and complex.
