Bouquet d'Opuhi Painting

I used oils on canvas to paint this magnificent bouquet of "Opuhi", tropical ginger flowers, and bird of paradise. I had set it on a table in the corner of my studio on the motu of Maeva in Huahine, French Polynesia and when I stepped back I was enthralled. The vase is a creation by Peter Owen, of the Huahine Pearl & Pottery Farm. I love the echo of the tahitian tattoo designs and the earth tones that bespeak the Maohi people. My still life paintings always include local style print fabrics that anchor them as being distinctly in Polynesia. For me, still lives are anything but "still", there is so much aliveness going on in flowers, even as they are sitting in a vase of water. I sense their spirit so present and so anchored to Source. They are wonderful meditative subjects to gaze on.
