About The Artwork

The blossoming branch of cherries is a painting inspired by the branch of almond tree by Vincent Van Gogh. Almonds bloom in February in Provence, in Poland, cherries bloom at the turn of April and May. After the cold, gray and tired branches bloom, promising sweet fruits in June. It is a festival of smell and color, a feast for bees and a wake-up call to life in full. Sweet cherries grew under the house of my childhood. The artwork has a thick texture, in one place gray paint forms a strongly convex form, which can be seen in the attached photos of details. This is a work from a series that was created by painting the previous artwork. The last layer is abstract and figurative. It is a farewell to work that did not stand the test of time. That is why on the back there is a painted old signature. I do not want to remember the previous layer. The last abstract-figurative layer is the most important.

I move between different styles, combining abstraction with figuration. Concerning themes and my color palette, I have no restrictions, with one exception: I avoid dramatism in depicted situations. Only the scale between extensive backgrounds and minor human figures or vehicles is constant. I am inspired by Dutch painting, especially by Peter Breughel. I like to think of my paintings as a kind of poetry without words. http://www.artminnow.com/index.php/2017/04/14/a-conversation-with-grazyna-smalej/
