My fascination with historical marine subjects sometimes takes me back to traditional marine painting. Research is undertaken prior to starting the painting. Cook set sail from Plymouth, England on 26 August 1768 and the voyage is well documented. First sailing to Tahiti to witness the transit of Venus across the Sun, then on to New Zealand where the first accurate charts/maps were made. Following that landing at Botany Bay, Australia in April 1770, returning to England in 1771 via the north of Australia. The wreck of the Endeavour was discovered in waters off Newport, Rhode Island in the 1990s. After Cook´s voyage the ship was sold and it is understood that she was sunk during the American War of Independence. This original oil painting is painted in a representational style depicting the Endeavour sailing in calm weather, with lots of attention paid to detail. It is being offered for sale framed and ready to hang. A high quality hand finished bespoke frame has been specifically selected. Exterior frame size: 29 x 35.5 inches.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
