Art Description

Painting: Ink, Paper, Gouache, Watercolor on Paper.

I love to collage, I love haunting antique stores, and I love cats. So it seems I was destined to create this Cat Noir Series. The Series came about rather by accident. One day when I ran out of canvas and heavy paper and didn't want to make a trip to the art store, I resorted to pulling pages out of damaged antique books, glueing them together on the back of a large piece of lightweight paper.

At first I experimented with figures on the antique pages and was unhappy with the result, but as I had been drawing wolves lately, it came to me that a cat would be a fun and interesting way to complete this experiment. I liked the results of my first piece so much that I have continued and created the Cat Noir Series.

In terms of the collage pieces, they are all from antique books. I work very intuitively and try not to read too much into what I use and how I use it. Instead, like this series and much of my artwork it is all a grand experiment that presents itself as it is created.

These paintings/collages are an absolute delight to work on, and I look forward to creating each and every piece. In this piece in particular, I wanted to have the mysterious black cat slinking through the collage -- almost as if he' stalking through a kind of antique history.
