ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an abstract oil painting using cold wax medium. Cold wax medium is mixed with oil paint to give the paint specific properties. It is made with linseed oil and beeswax and allows me to build up a painting of many layers, which provide depth and visual interest to the work. "Celestial Blue" is painted on on cradled board, which is made up of a light coloured wood. The sides of the cradled board are UNpainted so you will see natural wood there if you choose not to frame the painting. Please see the photographs to see what the sides look like. The painting is already wired for hanging and is signed on the back. This painting is made up of many layers of paint. I started out with a bright and multi-coloured underpainting that included reds, oranges, yellows and lime greens. Then I completed the painting in blues, whites and greys, leaving spots where the underpainting shows through. Three of the photographs show details of the work where you can see the underpainting showing through. Although this painting is an abstract, my work often reflects aspects of the natural world. Some might interpret this painting as being clouds, or reflecting visions of a region of deep space. That inspired the title I gave it.

I am a painter living on the West Coast of Canada in a semi-rural community which is accessible only by ferry. I paint mostly abstracts and landscapes. I usually start a painting without a predetermined idea and let it evolve according to my intuition. Many times the painting evolves to depict an imaginary landscape. I paint primarily in oil, but sometimes in watercolour, acrylic or alcohol inks. I appreciate the longer drying time of oil, and the buttery quality of the paint. My oil paintings often use cold wax medium, which changes the qualities of the paint, allowing me to build up many layers, giving depth and interest to the painting. My specialties are luminous abstracts and expressive landscapes. Artists whose work inspires me include Todd Clark (who I have studied with), Gordon Smith, JMW Turner and Claude Monet. Whether abstract or representational, my goal is for my paintings to communicate something of my interior, mental landscape. Each of us is an individual isolated mind in a complex world and it is so easy to feel ‘alone’ or ‘different’ from everyone else. Art can function as a way to communicate when words are insufficient for the task. My art often depicts the intersection of human construction (buildings, piers, bridges, signs etc) and the natural world. I studied and worked in physics and computing science before completing a degree in Visual Art.
