About The Artwork

Referencing the metaphysical style, the "Celestial Confinement" series questions religious institutions and the restrictions they place upon the natural, intuitive person. I grew up in the Mormon religion and its rules have continued to "structure" my daily perceptions even while I have been removed from the church. Like any structure, I ask the viewer if the architecture these paintings are based on are providing protection and celestial glory, or hindering us from exploring the world beyond their walls. This particular painting is based on the celestial room in the Paris, France Mormon temple. Note: Metallic gold paint was used. The color will vary depending on light and viewing angle.

I grew up in the American Southwest, exposed to desert landscapes and modern architecture. My father, a civil engineer, took me on tours of jails and prisons in my youth simultaneous to my religious, celestial grooming in enclosed institutions. This exposure to vast landscapes and constrained, invasive dwellings continues to shape my artistic career. I am intrigued by the contradiction of being in a place yet not being the place, that there is always a link and separation between structure and freedom.
