About The Artwork

From Farmer's son to Law Society Chairman to Artist. There is a 'nod' to Grant Wood's American Gothic however it is fleeting. Merely the inclusion of the hay fork which is balanced by the easel framing the subjects. Self portrait with Danuta my Wife and Artist (the easel is hers). The painting is in our personal collection. Des says Shaun's other works include Chairman’s Dinner. A painting that elicits so many questions, least of all, the title itself. Then there is the allusion to Grant Wood’s iconic image so we ask ourselves: why the pitchfork? And is there symbolic significance in the easel, the bird perched on the spade and the variety of small flowers in the foreground? Yet another conundrum; what is the significance of the medal the female model is holding? These elements give the picture an altogether interesting dimension and a potential inner dialogue between viewer and painting.

Shaun Donovan Fine Artist. I was born in Canada to an Irish Father and English Mother. My early years were in Northern Ontario. My Family moved to Ireland in the early 60s and I was brought up on my parents' Dairy Farm. This was quite a dramatic change of life from Canada in the 1960s to an Irish Farm very much of the 1800s. I believe my life experience was very unique learning to ride and drive horses as well as caring for, milking and driving cattle to market. Breeding and being a 'midwife' to a couple of Sows at two o'clock in the morning. I am Canadian, Irish and British. I live in the UK.
