Choreographers for hundreds of years have used stick figures to map out their dances. I am a choreographer who takes inspiration from a number of sources, randomly mapping out the trajectory of the work helps me to develop a dance language for the dancers, the shapes made with the body, indication of speed, balance and musicality to name but a few. I have taken these notions into my art works. We have cave paintings to remind us that early man did the same things for over two hundred thousand years. I think contemporary people can relate to these figures as a primary source. I am a movement junkie, these figures allow me to think about expression and art making in contemporary dance.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. Former Artistic Director Rambert Dance Company London from 2002-2018. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS.
