My newest series comprises ten core paintings, 90 x 90 cm each. They are shown here long before their completion. The process starts with a generous gold layer on the bottom, as all core paintings do. While the pieces look very similar to each other at the start, each additional step of their creation further differentiates them. Ultimately, much of their individuality will be owed to coincidence and the nature of the medium. At the beginning of our worldview stands the "mappa-mundi" (Eng. map of the world). I found tremendous inspiration In these early depictions of Earth. Five years ago, I saw the one which is depicted here in Palencia, Spain. The "Mapa-mundi de San Andrés de Arroyo" (c. 1200) has inspired me, to this day, to create a series of works closely connected to it. It touched me to witness what humans can create, but I was also intrigued by what it tells us about how we saw the world: before any planetary models existed, the world was depicted as round. Also, the similarity to a microscopic cellular organism with veins and organelles is striking. The purple and Lapislazuli hues create a genuinely magical object.

Switzerland
Heikedine Günther (*1966) is a Swiss contemporary artist living and working between Basel and Stalden, Switzerland. She is a painter, printer and sculptor who draws on the connection of abstraction and natural forms as well as the concepts of microcosm and macrocosm. Her leitmotiv is the Core. The Core is a symbol for potential and the longing for the existential. She devotes herself in a playful and experimental way to a variety of basic human themes with a strong focus on medieval art history. In doing so, she is concerned with understanding art as an energetic phenomenon that accelerates growth, both personal and societal. She is strongly concerned with material, color, and technique, drawing on a long-cultivated expertise on medieval art and Old Master techniques. This leads to fascinatingly multi-layered works on the level of both material and meaning that have found their way into international exhibitions and collections.
